Luggage security – Types of luggage locks and why are they important

by | Oct 10, 2021 | Locksmith Services

Have you made plans to travel in 2022? You may have everything in order, but have you considered the security of your luggage when it is in the hands of the airport or in your hotel room while you are away for the day? While you may have remembered to make sure you and your stuff are insured, there’s no harm in taking a few extra precautions so you don’t have to worry about your lost items while you’re enjoying your well-deserved vacation!

Luggage lock types:

There are many different luggage locks on the market, but which one is the best for keeping your luggage safe from theft?

Luggage padlock locks

Luggage padlocks with a key are one of the most popular padlocks on the market because they can be used for a variety of purposes, including securing your luggage and your garden shed.

The advantages of employing a simple key driven padlock include the fact that they are inexpensive and readily available at any local hardware store. These locks, on the other hand, are readily broken because the keyhole can be obstructed and keys can be misplaced, rendering the lock useless.

Combination locks

Combination locks are keyless locks that employ a combination of three or more dials to secure the lock instead of a key. Once the lock is locked, the user selects a pin code to obtain access.

Because there are no other compartments to carry around and perhaps lose, combination luggage locks are far more convenient than key operated locks. They are more durable than their counterparts because there is no weak point and no keyhole, but the lock is rendered worthless if the code is forgotten.

Cable locks

Instead of a rigid shackle, these security luggage locks have a flexible, extended cable that can easily pass through many zipper locations on bags.

If your bag or backpack has numerous compartments, vCable combination locks are ideal; there’s no need to fuss with multiple locks when a cable lock can do the job of multiple locks. Additionally, there are extenders available to purchase if you want to fasten your luggage to substantial items. A combination cable lock has the same drawbacks as a standard combination luggage lock.

Key card locks

To obtain access to these locks, you don’t need a key or a combination code; instead, a key card is used to unlock the padlocks.

For people who may misplace a small padlock key or forget the pin to their combination lock, key card locks are a perfect option. Most key card locks come with three cards, two of which are credit card sized to fit inside a purse or wallet and one of which is smaller to fit on a key chain, making them more difficult to lose than normal padlock keys. There is still a drawback to these locks in that no lock is completely secure, and all three key cards can be lost.

Why are they important

Using a luggage lock can help deter opportunistic baggage handlers or security officers from rummaging through your suitcase or bag once it’s been checked in at the airport, and it also ensures that your bag stays closed during transit, preventing your underwear from becoming spread out on the tarmac.

Using a suitcase lock adds an extra layer of security and peace of mind knowing your belongings are safe when you aren’t with your carry-on bags. However, anything of importance should always be carried in your hand luggage.
